06 March 2009, 08:17

The full report of the dental health results of primary one schoolchildren across Scotland has now been published by the National Dental Inspection Programme (NDIP).  The report covers the school year 2007 to 2008.  and shows an improving trend in the percentage of P1 children who showed no signs of having decay or dental treatment of decay in any of their deciduous teeth.

Mr. Martyn Merrett, Chairman of the Scottish Dental Epidemiological Co-ordinating Committee and Consultant in Dental Public Health, was extremely encouraged and delighted by the 2008 results for P1 children.

He said  'This is the fourth survey of five-year old children since 2003 and it continues to show that dental health in this age group is steadily improving.  This result is the best level of dental health for P1 children in Scotland ever achieved since records began.  With all the ongoing dental initiatives currently in place, this improving trend is set to continue and dental health of P1 children in Scotland will reach the target set for this age group by the Scottish Government for 2010.'
